RBG

Very soggy and rainy the past two days and as a result I’m a bit housebound – not that I would melt if I ventured out. I painted this near the study centre of the Royal Botanical Gardens late March – an overcast day looking  through trees and brush to York Boulevard on the other side of lake Ontario.

  1. I really like the way this painting goes back and forth from abstraction to representation. Nice sense of place too.

Wishing you sunnier days. Here? It's raining yellow bits of mesquite blossoms--just like rain in the wind.

    Achooo!

  3. Your paintings are always more
about perception and capturing the moment.
    Subtle but powerful.

  4. Wonderful silent, a little melancholic... I also love the compostition between abstraction and realistic! Best wishes for you!

  5. Melinda this is a really interesting comment - I'm interested in representation and I also enjoy formal elements for their own sake.
Btw the sun finally made an appearance late afternoon and bathed the magnolia across the street in lovely northwestern light. Now I'm interested in those yellow mesquite blossoms of yours - they sound absolutely delirious!

  6. Thank you Barbara. I want to go back there soon but now I'll have to pay because it's no longer off season. But the grounds and gardens are beautiful, so it really is worth it.
    love, Marcia

  7. That is a wonderful comment Doug, thank you! - it's true that I am interested in gesture and movement in general - the constant shifting of light etc.

  8. Kathrin thank you! You have also hit the nail on the head. I am attracted to the silence and a certain melancholy at times - a certain kind of aloneness that you can get while still feeling connected.

  9. Melinda, I should add gesundheit - I'm sneezing too. I have it on the best authority that the way to deal with it is to drink a lot of water and meditate.

  10. I love this, Marcia - beautiful design - Very moody and emotional, too. As for weather, please send me a little rain!

  11. I would love to send you rain Connie, buckets of it. I would even offer to do a rain dance - failing that we have a rain barrel overflowing but I know this is no joke and that you are in serious need of rain!
I certainly appreciate you stopping by and commenting. Take care!

  12. But the rain prompts muted colours and muted colours make for strong paintings and this is no exception. (But please don't send the rain over the pond - we have been having such nice sunshine)

  13. hi Marcia i was only going to stay a minute but you know how that goes..when i checked in a few months ago it was for your figurative work-your lines are beyond divine--but am so intrigued by your plein air observations and how you listen, feel and respond to the land -such a beautiful gut approach-
I'm not far from you-do you show anywhere? would love to see your work 'live'

*and I'm not surprised in the least at Sheila's response!

  14. Sheila - thank you for your gallant leap across the mighty pond! I love your delightful use of the word 'pond' a nice, affectionate word, although at first I was momentarily at a loss as to which one you were referring but then I realized you meant that one - the mighty Atlantic. I m so glad you're soaking up sunshine - good vitamin D and thank you for your thoughts on my painting!
