A woman on a cushion

I have a vague recollection of the model talking about a minor personality clash she was having with her pregnant cat or dog – or was it her daughter or was she complaining about her husband – whatever it was, she told it well – I do remember her commenting on her pose that it was very difficult to hold because her feet had a tendency to slide forward – yet she didn’t betray the slightest discomfort in her expression.
Two oil sketches, unfinished on gessoed mdv from 2009

  2. There is a lovely depth of color in these. I'm especially enjoying the mysterious richness of the surrounding color in the second image.

What fun, to listen to a good story while painting!

  3. I'm not sure how I missed these, Marcia, but I had to comment. They are wonderful and so different. I love the way you created the curves and form of her body in the first painting with such a soft palette. I adore the rich, sensuous use of colour in the second painting and how the form is suggested with your marks.Mm-mmm!

    How large are they?

  4. Barbara I was both humbled and honored that you tagged me on your blog! Thank you very much for that and for all the lovely comments you’ve made. I feel like one of your cats for whom you have just poured an overflowing saucer of rich cream on one of your best pieces of china.

  5. Thank you Melinda! I wish I could have finished this painting but the model didn’t come back and that was a disappointment because the pose and her personality were interesting. And then I realized the right hand was terribly out of proportion so I decided to abandon it and not try to go further with it from memory.
You’re right of course, it’s a privilege to be able to listen to the model who will talk freely – like you, I’m always curious about what people think.

  6. Hi Nicki! Thank you very much for your lovely comments! I was abominably lazy not to include dimensions. The first is 12.5”x16” and the second one I’ve cropped – it is 11”x14” on illustration board.
