Jewel

Original clay bust, eventually cast in ciment fondu, whereabouts unknown.

I began this portrait in my third floor studio on Emerald St. (Yes I know, I'm transient) Then we moved to Dundas where my husband was a town councillor for three years. That was before we moved to Guelph and then back to Hamilton. A short radius you might say. The whereabouts of this piece is a mystery to me. It disappeared, pinched, borrowed by someone. It's around somewhere. This black and white photo is all I have left. There was discoloration on the actual piece.

Maybe it'll turn up again. I'd love to have it back. So would my friend Jewel.

  1. Holy, moly mackerolly -- girl you are
good. This is magnificent beyond all compare,
    and it was stolen.

Yowsers. You are just a genius, and whoever
stole it should give it right back.

  2. All the work you have posted is wonderful; the drawings - stunning! And the bust of Jewel is a beauty.

Ah, the things that disappear... I had to abandon a 300 pound limestone carving once, thinking it was so heavy that no one would swipe it before I could return and claim it.

Wrong! I hope it is appreciated by the person/persons who possess it.

  3. Barbara, I'm not holding my breath.
Maybe they will, maybe they won't, but nevertheless I'm crazy about you. That's a song. Did your ever hear it?

Now I'm going to repeat myself: get some beauty rest!!!!

    Love you,
    Marcia

  4. Patrice, you dear lady, thank you so much for coming back.

Just to let you know, I have huge admiration for your work!

So you were a carver eh? It’s slow work and so easy to make a mistake. Did you work from a maquette or did you carve directly - Henry Moore style? Actually Moore did large plaster pieces that combined two techniques, building up with plaster and direct carving. Maybe you’re familiar with his work?

    Be well!

  6. I don't understand. I just posted a comment here and one a few days ago on your last post but they don't show up. Usually they appear within a few seconds or you get the message that it will be checked by the blog owner(something like that anyway).
But here I don't get any notice nor is the comment being published.
Well, I'm not worried about my so very interesting comments, but I didn't want you to think I am ignoring your posts! On the contrary, Marcia! I am very impressed by your work and always enjoy looking here!

  7. Hi Mary,

    Many thanks for your comment.
I see that you are a Bostonian and part of an artists co-op that’s been established since 1990 - fantastic!
And that you occupy a studio on the 4th floor of the sandpaper factory - that’s equally fantastic..
I’ve been enjoying looking at your beautiful paintings the past few days and I also see that you were artist of the month for November at a venue in Boston. Congratulations!
    Cheers,
    Marcia

  8. Hi Liza,

The internet is a confused, confusing capricious beast at times that can drive even grown men to tears. I appreciate your concern but I was flaked out for awhile and not really aware of things appearing and disappearing but now I see your comment and I am very pleased to have it.
    Many thanks!

  9. Marcia, this is so powerful!
It reminds me of the self portrait busts of Kathe Kollwitz!
I'm so glad I found your blog!
