Nature Is Beyond Us

How bizarre. They don't know how to count. They now think there are three times as many stars as was once predicted - triple the amount! But when you get into the billions, trillions and zillions - do I have that right - the possibility for  error (terror) compounds,  is quadrupled. Do you know how old I am?  I’m two and a half and there are several of us - precocious is it not?

Below are short poses from a recent life drawing session on manilla, 18”x24” – conté and charcoal.

  1. But who's counting, eh?

You're very good at giving figures weight and mass. They sit and stay. Not as easy as you make it look.

  2. Love these. Two eh? Two years on the blog.
Well I like that Paul Simon song. "God is old,
we're not old." It has a line, "The human race walked the Earth for 2.7 million. And we estimate the universe about 13-14 billion. When all these numbers tumble into your imagination
Consider that the Lord was there before creation."

Whether you believe in the Lord or not, I love the song.

    And your drawings.

    Love Barbara

  3. Precocious, yes. And it reminds me that I'm not as young as I used to be. Funny thing that--I never am.

Nice figures. I could learn a thing or two from you.

  4. Hi Sam
You're right - who's counting! - other than a few lonely star gazers in Hawaii.
As a matter of fact I'm star gazing right this very moment at a Starbucks in Ottawa before heading off to see the Louise Bourgeois retrospective at the National gallery.
Thank you for your comment! Weight and mass is something I work at.
    Be well,
    Marcia

  5. Barbara, I was going to say that in the overall scheme of things I was only a mere two years old myself - a mere babe and irresistibly precocious - a stab at self sarcasm.
Oddly that great Simons song sort of passed me by like other huge chunks of popular culture - but it certainly gets at the crux of things.
Btw I'm in your hometown right now tagging along with David who's at a conference and to get even for cultural deprivation I'm going to spend the afternoon at the National Gallery.
    Thanks for your comment!
    love, Marcia

  6. Edgar, thank you! I think it's quite the opposite - it's you and Melinda who can teach me a thing or two!!!

  7. The Louise Bourgeois retrospective?! Okay, I'm envious. I hope you'll share your thoughts on the exhibit.

Your drawings are, again, wonderful. It seems as though the figures are dancing and turning, full of life and energy.

Oh, I think we can learn a lot from you!

Have a great time and tell us all about it when you can.

  8. Melinda I misled you about there being a retrospective including myself! There was no such thing ,wishful thinking on my part - But there is the Maman in front of the museum where she looks formidable, imposing , content and I suppose maternal. Then there is her swan song installation in a room by itself in the permanent contemporary collection - Cell (The Last Climb) Have you seen it?
I was able to take pictures of a few paintings but security asked me to put away my camera.
I am sorry to take so long to get back to you. Something phlegmatic or sluggish in my nature.
So as I told Edgar and it bears repeating - I can learn a lot from you!!!
