Versions of Myself

I have been told that doing one's self portrait in oil is a good way to learn how to handle this difficult medium. Well I can't disagree with that.
I find my husband's observation interesting also, that although neither of these necessarily looks like me, they are still interesting...

  1. I really like these self portraits. I think you've caught a gesture and an essence of a moment in front of the easel/mirror. You are very brave to work in self portraiture! I find it unsettling to say the least.

Hope to see more of your wonderful painting and sculpture!

  2. Well Edward,
I only have boundless admiration for your work!!! So a comment or even the slightest murmur from you not only causes my pulse to accelerate, but it makes my day and then some!!!!

  3. Hi Melinda,
I’m trying to be as dispassionate and hard headed as I can when I look in the mirror and back and forth, back and forth between it and canvas. It is some of the best exercise I’m getting these days..
Thank you so much for your kind encouragement!

BtwI hope you realize how beautiful your Grand Canyon suite is!!!

  4. Hi Marcia,

I know what David means. Your mouth is exactly you
when you're thinking something over and getting
ready to come back with a reasoned response.

    Love the portraits.

  5. Barbara,
There are times when people, including myself can hear, see and feel the wheels turning in my head. The constriction of thoughts contracting and expanding in order to release themselves are exhausting. And then hardly anything comes out. Do you ever get that feeling?

  6. Marcia,

You are way too deep and intellectual for me. When I feel like that, I know it's time for bed, or time to paint. I am not deep.

    Your shallow friend,

    Barbara

Thank you Barbara, for being shallow. Shallow is good. You're right I am too deep. Even for me.
    Cogito ergo sum.
Thanks again for the card and the joshing. see you New Years!

  8. Ah... I wondered where the self-portrait was hiding! One day I must find one I did of myself (albeit from a photo) and post it to my blog.

I wonder if any artist is ever happy with how they see themselves?
